Owen Smith - Engineering Portfolio

Welcome!

I grew up in Ridgefield CT and, in 2017, attended Syracuse University to study Mechanical Engineering and Finance while rowing for the Men’s Division 1 Crew Team. After graduation, I moved to Boston, MA to work as a VDC Engineer at Skanska USA Civil. This role has shown me the the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology with the construction world, and just how many more opportunities for growth there are in the space.

My first-principles based mindset applies to all aspects of my life. I believe it is paramount to break questions down into their essential truths, iterate on methods of improvement, and choose the most effective path forward. This makes me an incredibly flexible, resilient, and creative problem solver - something that has propelled me into a senior engineer role so far at Skanska with no prior industry experience.

I bring an entrepreneurial approach to integrating technology into our various jobs, and believe there is no room for mistakes when we have the tech to assist with clarity, safety, and efficiency. Advising on these 3 criteria has led to numerous job wins, schedule improvements, and cost-efficiency breakthroughs in my short career so far.

While my time spent bringing new technology to the civil engineering environment has been rewarding, my true passion is developing good products for good customers. Whether that’s through Industrual Design, Mechanical Engineering, Hardware Engineering, or any-related Technical Project Manager roles, it brings me great satisfaction to participate in iterative design practices of all types. Bridging the gap between design, manufacturing, and business efficiency is my strong suit, and I am looking to build a successful career doing just that. Many of these thought processes can be seen throughout the various projects outlined in this portfolio.

Outside of work, I am an avid 3D modeler/printer, skier, cyclist, runner, hiker, fisherman, and scuba-diver. I truly believe there is no better way to spend free-time than learning and being active - while setting and chasing new goals.
